Playgraounds in the world are standardized, what about weather?
Playgrounds thrive when the weather works for children and their parents. Many countries have hard climate such as too cold winter in Norway and Canada or too hot summer such as in Saudi Arabia and UAE which makes these areas inappropriate for playing in theses seasons. Yet children’s playgrounds are not developed to deal with the weather.
We conducted research using case studies in Saudi Arabia and Norway. The finding was clear:
1. In Saudi Arabia outdoor playgrounds are abandoned and replaced by large private indoor play areas in shopping malls. 2. In Norway playgrounds are largely deserted in winter and replaced by snow play
Different climates and same design pattern: The result is public playgrounds stop functioning for long periods of the year.
In both cases TV or mobile become a good alternative. Why there is no better design solutions to fit local climate conditions.
