“Form follows function” became a foundation of modern architectural thinking not only in design, but also at the heart of architectural education. Despite the emergence of many new movements, functional thinking has remained fundamental to modern architecture.
But whose function?Since the emergence of modern architecture, architects and those shaping our cities have primarily responded to adults’ needs, interests, priorities, and demands.
Modern architecture transformed the world by establishing new principles of architectural thinking. Yet it failed to recognize that children also needed to be included in the new era.As a result, the world has built adult-centered cities.
But what about children?
Perhaps a large change is needed through a fundamental change in architectural knowledge and practice by asking:
“Whose function are we designing for in the city?”
The answer has to include children. Not a few solutions, but the whole city.
