Stairs have existed since the earliest civilizations.Yet the baby gate was developed only in the 20th century.
The first four wheeled, four stroke gasoline automobile appeared in 1886.Child car seats emerged mainly in the 1960s, with safety standards coming later.
The modern playground also appeared only in the late 19th century. What does this tell us?
For thousands of years, we developed cities, buildings, streets, public spaces without systematically designing for children’s specific needs.
And the problem continues.
There is still a long list of missing solutions, shortages, barriers, and conflicts that are fundamentally issues of children’s architecture.
A city developed over thousands of years can still lack basic architectural solutions for children.
This is not only a lack of playgrounds.
It is a missing dimension of architecture itself.
Now, a comprehensive Children’s Architecture is needed to achieve what generations have not yet achieved: a city truly designed for children.
